Locally known as Pura Besakih and also referred to as Bali Besakih Temple, this is the biggest Hindu temple in Bali. The "mother temple" of Bali, Besakih Temple, is situated more than 900 meters up Gunung Agung's slopes. From ancient times, it has been recognized as a holy location in Bali. The first written record of its existence is found in an inscription from the year 1007 A.D. Since the Gelgel dynasty in the fourteenth century, it has been acknowledged as the principal and most sacred temple on the island. On the full moon of the Balinese month "Kedasa," the entire complex of Besakih celebrates the visit of the gods with a massive throng of pilgrims.
